A day in the life of….
Andy Cooke, National Account Manager, Bank of Ireland for Intermediaries
How long have you worked in Financial Services?
A year after graduating, back in 1994, I joined Abbey National as a cashier in Plymouth. So it’s been a fair few years! I’ve seen lots of changes within the mortgage market since then!
How do you start your day?
I like to start the day with some sort of exercise, followed by a nice strong coffee. I usually take the dog for a walk, but recently I’ve taken to starting my day with an early morning swim. I’m training for my first triathlon!
What do you love about being a National Account Manager?
I love the variety of the role. I spend my time working closely with some great people from various areas of the intermediary market including; Mortgage Clubs, DA firms, BDMs, Marketing, Product and Governance teams. One minute I can be recording a webinar, then I could be attending one of our underwriting surgeries to get immediate answers for brokers. I also get to visit some great venues for roundtables and exhibitions. Each day is different!
What do you find most satisfying about your role?
It’s really satisfying when a broker is struggling to place a client with a complex case and I’m able to say we can do that! Helping clients to secure a mortgage, as well as making sure they can remain in their home throughout whatever life throws at them is a great part of our industry. Being able to offer new solutions to Brokers for their clients (such as our Bespoke service) is also really satisfying. The way people work and the way their income is structured has changed so much in the last few years and it’s great to see the industry responding to this.
What are the perks of the job?
Apart from meeting some great people and spreading the word on how we can help brokers and their clients, there are a few perks. So far this year I’ve been fortunate enough to support a firm’s charity golf day as well as played a charity football match at Derby County’s football stadium – Pride Park.
What was your dream job?
I always wanted to be a Police dog handler. I didn’t quite manage it but I do have a dog called Koda.
